JKA grading is not only about changing belt colour. Each examination develops strong basics, correct form, focus, timing, control and long-term karate character.
Kihon
Kihon · FundamentalsBasic techniques performed individually and in combinations. Kihon demonstrates stance, posture, breathing, speed, power and correct technical form.
Kata
Kata · FormsPre-arranged sequences of techniques performed against imaginary opponents. Kata develops rhythm, balance, direction, focus and traditional Shotokan expression.
Kumite
Kumite · Partner WorkControlled partner practice progressing from five-step kumite to one-step kumite and free sparring for higher grades.
